Albuminuria is a physical condition in which the main protein in the blood 'albumin' is excreted in the urine in abnormal amounts; It is an early sign of damage to the kidney's filtering mechanism (filter) and an independent indicator of heart disease risk.
Albuminuria occurs when the function of the tiny filtering units or 'glomeruli' of the kidney is impaired. As a result, proteins that are supposed to be trapped in the bloodstream are excreted in the urine along with waste products. In medicine, its presence is determined by the 'urine albumin-to-creatinine ratio' (uACR) using a 'spot urine sample' or immediate urine sample.
Symptoms-
In the early stages of albuminuria, there are usually no symptoms. Visible symptoms may occur as protein excretion increases and kidney function decreases:
• Foamy or bubbly urine
• Swelling of the feet, ankles, hands, stomach or face (edema)
• Puffiness around the eyes in the morning
