Small cells called 'islet cells' in the pancreas produce the hormone insulin, which breaks down carbohydrates into blood sugar (glucose). In diabetic patients, the body's own white blood cells accumulate in the pancreas and attack and destroy the islet cells, resulting in diabetes. Islet cells are also called 'beta cells' and are scattered throughout the pancreas like grains of sand.
Note-2
Diet plays an important role in the treatment of diabetes. What kind of food and how much is being eaten should be looked at. Below are some suggestions for healthy eating habits:
(a) Eat complex carbohydrates or 'complex carbohydrates' (eg red flour or whole wheat, bread, oats etc.). They are absorbed slowly into the bloodstream, giving the pancreas more time to produce enough insulin.
(b) s (b) Cauliflower, broccoli, tomato, cabbage, radish, celery, bitter gourd and thin soup are good for health.
Note-4:
(c) Fruits like papaya, melon, grapefruit, guava and orange are also considered good food.
(d) Avoid leg and thigh meat of chicken or other birds and eat white meat from the breast instead.
Juvenile (type-1) diabetes affects children and impairs their physical growth. Insulin is not a permanent cure for this. It not only helps to keep the patient alive, but cannot prevent serious complications like kidney failure, blindness, nerve damage, amputation, heart attack and stroke. In allopathic treatment such patients are advised to inject insulin multiple times a day and check their blood sugar levels several times a day.
