Note 1: Smoking is the primary cause of bladder cancer. In more than 85% of cases, the cancer originates from a layer of cells known as the 'transitional epithelium'. Typically, the first and only symptom of bladder cancer is the presence of blood in the urine. Blood in the urine can also occur due to bladder stones. Other symptoms include frequent urges to urinate, an intense need to urinate, and discomfort or a burning sensation during urination.
Note 2: There are several surgical procedures for removing cancer; most of these can cause physical changes—such as impotence in men, and alterations in sensitivity and the ability to achieve orgasm in women.
Note 3: Consuming approximately 2–3 liters of fluids (such as water, soda, etc.) daily can reduce the risk of bladder cancer by half. These fluids likely flush out cancer-causing substances (carcinogens) and dilute the urine, thereby minimizing the contact of toxic substances with the bladder wall.
Note 4: Some patients with bladder-related issues present with the following complaints:
a. Frequent urination—more than eight times within 24 hours.
b. Waking up two or more times during the night to urinate.
c. An intense and sudden urge to urinate—which, if not managed quickly, could lead to leakage.
